In the Middle Ages, troubadours were the shining knights of poetry. It was troubadours who made chivalry a high art, writing poems and singing about gallant knights and their deeds. Traveling from city to city they acted as an agent of communication, improving the flow of information in their society. "Troubadour" was a fitting name for such creative artists; it derives from an Old Provencal word meaning "to compose."
